The Foundation for Active Civic Education (FACE), with essential funding from All We Can and Y Care International, has taken a significant step in addressing the urgent needs of climate-vulnerable communities by establishing the 4-hectare Nyamfisi solar-powered irrigation scheme in Group Village Headman Annie Petrol, Traditional Authority Mbenje, Nsanje District in Malawi.

This initiative directly benefits 58 households, reflecting the community's proactive efforts to combat the growing challenges of climate change, such as recurrent droughts and frequent floods that threaten livestock, crops, infrastructure, and human lives.

The Nyamfisi scheme is more than a response to environmental challenges; it aligns with broader goals of improving nutrition, enhancing food security, and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.

By harnessing solar power for irrigation, households can now cultivate a variety of crops, including staple foods like maize and high-value crops such as onions, tomatoes, and cabbages. This not only ensures a steady supply of nutritious food for the community but also strengthens their economic base through the sale of surplus produce.

This intervention aligns with key national and international frameworks, including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 1 (No Poverty). It also supports the Malawi 2063 national agenda, which emphasizes the importance of agricultural productivity, food security, and resilience to climate change.

Additionally, the initiative is in line with the Constitution of Malawi, which guarantees the right to food and the protection of the environment.

The Nyamfisi scheme exemplifies how targeted interventions, supported by strategic partnerships, can empower vulnerable communities to adapt to climate change, improve nutrition and food security, and contribute to sustainable economic development. This project not only addresses immediate needs but also aligns with long-term goals for a more resilient and prosperous Malawi.
