SUCCESS STORY OF BEN

caption

Meet Chikumbuso Ben, a resilient and determined farmer from Nsanje, Malawi who turned adversity into opportunity through irrigation farming. Despite the severe drought that hit his community, Ben chose to take on the challenge of irrigation farming as a means of providing for his family and community.

With just one treddle pump shared among members of his irrigation scheme, Ben decided to cultivate onions on his 2-acre plot of land. He saw the potential for onions as a cash crop and planted just 0.5 acres of maize as a supplement. His vision paid off, and he started harvesting onions in early September 2014.

By October 3rd, Ben had already sold onions worth MK 265,000.00, a remarkable feat considering he had only invested MK 30,000.00 in onion seeds and used organic manure and family labor for the rest. This income was enough to purchase maize to feed his family.

Ben hails from Makwalo village in GVH Fulukiya T/A Mbenje and farms in the Makwalo irrigation scheme. He credits his success to the advisory support and treddle pumps provided by FACE and GOAL Malawi. He is proud to be a model farmer and an inspiration to others in his community.

Chikumbuso Ben's story is a true testament to the power of perseverance, determination, and innovation in the face of adversity. With the right resources, support, and mindset, anything is possible. Let his success story motivate and inspire you to pursue your dreams and overcome any challenges that come your way.
