THE FORMATION OF TREE NURSERIES AND COMMITTEES AT VILLAGE LEVEL

Climate change is a significant global challenge, and reversing its effects requires collective efforts. One of the recommended actions to mitigate climate change is to plant trees unceasingly and practice reforestation in targeted villages.

In line with this, beneficiaries have been advised to establish tree nurseries and committees at the village level. This program is being implemented by FACE with funding from Irish Aid through Goal Malawi.

Already, some villages have taken the initiative to establish tree nurseries. For example, Kanyanyi and Mchacha6 from Mbenje Chitseko, and Mbingwa from TA Mlolo have started their tree nurseries. Kanyanyi's tree nursery fence currently has 2100 trees of three species, namely Neem, Acacia, and Msangu. Mchacha6 has planted 1400 trees of two species, Neem and Acacia.

In Chitseko, there are 3217 seedlings of Msangu and Acacia, and some fruit species such as pawpaw have been integrated as a byproduct of the collaboration between lead farmers and nutrition volunteers.

The establishment of these tree nurseries is a significant step towards achieving the goal of reversing the effects of climate change. The seedlings will eventually grow into trees that will not only help to reduce carbon dioxide levels but also provide other benefits such as soil conservation and improved air quality. Moreover, the integration of fruit species in the tree nurseries is an innovative way of promoting food security and nutrition in the villages.

In conclusion, the formation of tree nurseries and committees at the village level is a commendable action towards mitigating climate change. The example set by Kanyanyi, Mchacha 6, and Chitseko should inspire other villages to follow suit.

With collective efforts, we can make a significant impact in reversing the effects of climate change.
